A quick walk from the ‘Lichtenberg’ rapid-transit station will take you to Zachertstrasse, a quiet residential street with a rich stock of trees and a homogeneous façade line of Belle Époque buildings or listed residential buildings from the 1930s.

Raised in 1900, the four-storey multi-family dwelling at Zachertstrasse 8 consists of a front building plus side building which are grouped around a quiet inner courtyard. Weitlingkiez, a popular neighbourhood in the southern part of Lichtenberg between Rummelsburger Bucht, the Herzberge landscape park and the Tierpark open range zoo, is a green and welcoming quarter. It is still close to downtown, directly connected to the public transport network, and has a sound infrastructure including shopping centres, small neighbourhood stores, and medical amenities. Schools and preschools are located within walking distance, and a large number of leisure attractions for cultural and sporting activities are found in the immediate vicinity.

In this quarter, Lichtenberg presents its most adaptable and vibrant side. It is fast becoming the district of choice for young people and families who brighten up the streetscape with a fresh sense of joie-de-vivre. They are behind the colourful mix of cafés and boutique stores, and the reason why so many green spaces now feature playgrounds. Several supermarkets and stores are within walking distance, and the conveniently accessible underground and rapid transit lines will quickly take you to either of the two Ring Center shopping malls on Frankfurter Allee.

In addition to a wider range of shops and restaurants, there are a lot of cultural venues to be discovered in the Weitlingkiez quarter and its surrounding area. You can also study the history of the area in Friedrichsfelde Palace or in the Stasi-Museum and the Hohenschönhausen Memorial, both devoted to the history of East Germany under Communism.
